Woolwich Works choir opens with bursary places available

In September 2021, London’s most exciting new music and community venue, Woolwich Works opened with a huge launch event. Acts included Afrikan Boy, Mica Paris and Lucy-Anne Daniels, who were supported by a community choir of local residents. The choir were led by Some Voices Musical Director Laura Howe and through only a short rehearsal period became a strong unit who were very keen to continue singing together.

Thanks to their enthusiasm, Some Voices have now opened up an ongoing Woolwich choir, rehearsing Thursday evenings at Woolwich Works. The choir is open to everyone – like all Some Voices choirs there are no auditions, no experience is required.

“The group who came together for the launch event were an absolute joy to work with and by the show they really felt and sounded like a choir who have been singing together for years! I was bowled over by their passion for singing and their desire to keep the group together. So I’m super excited that we have launched Some Voices Woolwich choir at the fantastic Woolwich Works venue and I can’t wait to see how it grows.”

Laura Howe, Musical Director, Some Voices.

Some Voices choir’s mission is to make singing available to as many people as possible, and aligns with Woolwich Works’ desire to develop the arts in their local community:

“Our spaces enable us to support and showcase local creatives, community groups and emerging talent, creating a sustainable organisation of national significance, for local benefit.” James Heaton, CEO, Woolwich Works

To enable as many local people to join the choir as possible, Woolwich Works is offering a limited number of bursaries to residents of the Royal Borough of Greenwich who’d like to join the choir but can’t afford the full membership fees.

If you’d like to apply for a bursary, please email choir@woolwich.works giving details of your name, address and circumstances and they’ll try to help. Bursaries will be prioritised towards those claiming Universal Credit but anyone who needs the support is welcome to apply.
