Remember, there are varying degrees of abilities - which is good and necessary - it's how we build a group sound. But we do consider the following when listening to everyone.
• Even tone of voice - shows your range is even throughout the song
• Dynamics - shows you can listen and blend with other voices
• Presentation/Stage presence - You seem comfortable singing in front of someone
• Pitch and breath support- notes are accurately sung and breathe control is apparent
• Expression - you indicate a feeling/spirit/character of the song.
Problems that often crop up in singers of all abilities and need consistent work are around support, breathing and technique. Doing further work in the main choirs will always improve your voice in these areas. Technique is often talked about in choir rehearsals, but having one on one tuition is always a good thing to do. Even the most advanced of singers will have a singing teacher who can work well with them and is worth considering.
We do not expect people to be perfect singers in order to be in Semi Chorus, but the things that need to be particularly secure and strong are pitch, breath support and tone. So this is a good place to start.
What makes a good audition?
Pick a song that you enjoy, and that you feel shows off the best part of your voice. There are some easy and helpful tips to help you pick that song:
Experiment with different songs.
Pick a song that you connect to.
The big one - always record yourself and play it back. How does it sound? Really listen to yourself and be honest. If you are struggling in some sections of the song then pick another that has a smaller range (problems with support and pitching), shorter phrases and a slower of faster tempo (problems with breathing technique) a different style/genre or intention/message (problems with expression and performance)
Don't be too ambitious. We don't need to hear lots of coloratura (think Christina Aguilera) to hear a good voice.
