How do online choir rehearsals work?

Some Voices choir is all about getting together and having fun singing. In 2020, being unable to meet in person, we worked on creative ways to keep learning music together online. Our virtual rehearsals from the summer are all available on our YouTube channel for anyone to join in with. Subscribe to our channel to be the first to hear about new live rehearsals.

Now we are also offering virtual workshops to teams and organisations who want to connect remotely and share the joy of singing.

What is a virtual singing workshop?

Some Voices have developed online workshops so you and your team can learn a song of your choice together live via video conference with a Some Voices choir leader.

Whilst singing together in person makes a joyful sound, the video conference platforms currently available have a delay which makes singing together remotely sound pretty terrible. In our virtual singing workshops, the choir leader teaches a song with all participants on mute. This allows you to see each other joining in but you cannot hear others or be heard. This is great for those who are less confident in their singing ability and means everyone can relax and sing comfortably.

Our singing workshops don’t require any previous experience and you don’t need to read music. All you have to do is listen to the leader sing a line of the song and repeat it.

What happens in an online singing workshop?

We start with a physical warm up, with a bit of gentle movement to get our bodies engaged. Next we warm up our voices with some simple and fun singing exercises. Warming up together also helps to break the ice and help everyone feel energised and ready to sing.

The choir leader will then teach one of our original arrangements of a popular song, line by line. Depending on your group size and confidence, you can choose to learn harmony parts or just keep it simple.

Once you have learned a section of the song, the leader will play one of our of Virtual Voices videos. These are pre-recorded videos of our professional choir singing all the parts of the track. You can see and hear your part and join in, whilst hearing the other parts and how it all fits together. It’s a great way to experience the full choir sound even on your own at home.

Can my team do an online choir performance?

Following the workshop, if you and your team want to create a performance, Some Voices can make it happen. We can send out audio tracks for you to practice and then record with. You can film yourselves singing the song and send us your videos to be edited together. We will create a unique performance video for you with your footage so you can share it with your friends, family and colleagues.

How do I book a virtual choir workshop?

If you are looking for a team building activity to connect remote colleagues or friends, a virtual singing workshop with Some Voices will give you a joyous shared experience to remember.

Simply email events@somevoices.co.uk and we will arrange everything.

Here is our Musical Director, Laura Howe, to talk you through how it all works:

Some Voices

SOME VOICES started small in 2010, with seven chorus members meeting up to perform original arrangements of popular classics that range from Bowie to Bjork, from Stevie Wonder to Stevie Nicks, from Folk to Hip Hop, and everything in between - all with a Some Voices twist.

Nine years down the line, more than 1500 singers are now part of the exciting ensemble that performs on some of the biggest stages in London. KOKO, The Southbank Centre, Oval Space,The Rivoli Ballroom, The Grand Clapham, HERE and The Troxy have all seen the group attract audiences in their thousands
